Peter Vitale on
composition
I feel the most creative as a composer when there's a story to tell. For theatrical productions, I spend as much time as possible reading the text and seeing the story in my mind's eye until sounds and musical ideas start to suggest themselves. I also compose from within the rehearsal room, allowing the rhythms of the actors, the emotional architecture of a scene, and the vision of the director to influence the process.
When approaching a new project, my guiding question is this: What is essential? I love the challenge of composing music that illuminates and deepens an audience's journey but does so without drawing attention to itself. If successful, the resulting collaboration is a piece of work where the music and sound feel inevitable and imagination is sparked.
